Breathing Better: Curing Respiratory Diseases Through Research (ATS Foundation)

The ATS Foundation (dba Breathing Better: Curing Respiratory Diseases Through Research) is the philanthropic arm of the American Thoracic Society.

We support the ATS mission by funding research, education, and training to prevent, treat, and cure respiratory diseases worldwide.

The young researchers funded though ATS Foundation Research Programs grants are pursuing novel approaches to unlock the mysteries of respiratory diseases. We define success by the benefits we provide to patients, families, and communities worldwide.

Respiratory disease is the third leading cause of death nationwide yet research into lung diseases is woefully underfunded. As a result, the most promising scientific leads of many young investigators go unfunded. For patients and their families desperately seeking cures and treatments for lung diseases, support for research can be a matter of life and death.

► Infants and young children are particularly susceptible to lung diseases.

► Asthma is the most common chronic disease, affecting about 14% of children globally and rising.

► Pneumonia is the world’s leading killer of young children.

► The most common lethal cancer in the world is lung cancer, which kills more than 1.4 million people each year.

► Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is the fourth-leading cause of death worldwide—and the numbers are growing.

But research can change the future.

Your thoughtful gift supports grants for promising young researchers studying lung cancer, asthma, acute respiratory distress syndrome, pulmonary fibrosis, pulmonary hypertension, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and more.

Your gift builds a future where we cure respiratory diseases through research—and patients can breathe better.
